GOBii has developed open-source genotype data management and marker- and genomic-assisted breeding tools and are working on integrating these with adjacent data management systems and tools. Through this collaboration, two workshops will be hosted in February 2021. Both workshops will focus on GOBii data management and data analysis in Flapjack (marker-assisted backcrossing, pedigree verification and forward breeding) developed in collaboration with the James Hutton Institute), and Galaxy (Genomic Selection).

Specialty crop and animal breeding have lagged behind major crops and animal breeding (e.g, maize, cattle) in genomics and phenomics tool use. Sometimes this is due to crop biology, but more often to size and availability of or access to resources. Breeding Insight (BI) acts as a conduit of information, support, and resources to enable genomic insight and selection across all of the USDA-ARS public breeding efforts.

Reversing this long-standing trend is the objective behind recent changes in seed systems, from plant breeding through to a rapid delivery of new crop varieties to farmers.
