Overview & history
The CGIAR Excellence in Breeding (EiB) Platform was established in 2017 as part of the CGIAR Portfolio of Research Programs and Platforms. The starting vision of success was to enable staple crop and animal breeding programs targeting the developing world to make step changes in increasing genetic gains of cultivars and breeds delivered to farmers, for impact on food and nutrition security, climate change adaptation and development at large.
As of January 2022, EiB is no longer an official CGIAR Platform, but it continues to support operationalization of the CGIAR breeding modernization agenda through the support of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. EiB team members work across Genetic Innovation Initiatives, and a plan for full transition is developing.
Platform steering committee (PSC)
EiB was governed by a Platform Steering Committee (PSC) consisting of 13 regular members in addition to the EiB Director, representing CGIAR, national agricultural research systems and the private sector.
