Giovanny Covarrubias-Pazaran presents an introduction to genomic prediction and the link to the breeder's equation, describing key uses of genomic selection to increase the rate of response to selection such as increased accuracy, changing selection intensity and reducing cycle time. This session is focused on the basics of what genomic prediction implies in terms of data and models and applications. Common questions raised by CGIAR programs during interactions with the EiB platform are also covered.

Genomic selection/prediction is becoming an important tool to maximize genetic gain in breeding programs. The method provides multiple ways to improve different aspects of the breeder's equation. In this training, the basics of genomic selection are explained and the different scenarios where the methodology can be used are presented. Experts from the CGIAR system including CIMMYT, IRRI, and ICRISAT present case examples on the proper deployment of GS in running programs.
